GBT Community Fund

What is the GBT Community Fund?

The sickle cell community is in a time of crisis. For people living with sickle cell, there is an immediate and overwhelming need for food, water, protective gear, basic supplies, mental health, educational and other support services due to COVID-19. GBT has created a special $150,000 relief fund to help support people living with sickle cell disease.

To ensure that this emergency support quickly reaches sickle cell patients, GBT has established a simple and fast grant application process. Any U.S. non-profit organization that supports people living with sickle cell disease may apply. All applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and will be accepted until Friday, April 17th, 2020 at 11:59pm PDT. The GBT Community Fund will close as soon as the $150,000 has been committed, which may occur before the deadline. Applicants will be notified about grant determination within 2 business days after GBT receives the application. The sooner GBT receives the application, the sooner GBT can be responsive. GBT expects the typical grant to be $5,000 per organization.

Who is eligible to apply?

  • U.S. non-profit organizations that support the sickle cell disease community may apply. Proof of 501c3 status will be determined by:
    • IRS determination letter of 501(c)(3) status
    • W-9 form
  • If the non-profit organization has already submitted these documents via the funding request portal in the past, there is no need to re-submit.

What will be funded?

  • The purpose of the emergency grant fund is to provide immediate and direct support for people living with sickle cell during this COVID-19 crisis. Examples of how grant funding may be used include and are not limited to groceries, protective gloves, masks, and other basic supplies, mental health support for social isolation, educational support, tools for setting up a virtual clinic visit.

How do I apply?

How much funding can I request?
  • To ensure that the emergency fund can reach a broad group of people living with sickle cell disease, we expect the typical grant amount to be $5,000 per organization.

How long will GBT be accepting funding requests?

  • Due to the immediate and urgent needs of the sickle cell community, there is a deadline to ensure that these emergency funds reach the community as quickly as possible. GBT will be accepting funding requests starting Thursday, April 2nd until Friday April 17th at 11:59pm pacific daylight time. Funding decisions will be made on a rolling basis, so the earlier GBT receives the application, the sooner the review committee can make decisions. The GBT Community Fund will close as soon as the $150,000 has been committed, which may occur before the deadline. The committee will make decisions quickly, and no later than 2 business days after the funding request is received.

What is the payment process?

  • Payments can be issued either by wire transfer or by check. Wire transfers will be processed faster than check requests. We expect wire transfers to be sent within 2-3 business days after grant approval and confirmation of banking information, while checks will take longer to mail.

How many proposals can my organization submit?

  • To ensure that emergency funds can reach as many as possible in the sickle cell community, we are limiting this emergency grant program to one proposal per organization.

How do I check the status of my request?

Can I start an application and come back later to finish it?

  • If you are unable to complete a request for any reason, you have the ability to save your work and login later to complete it.
